About the artist and the album:
Hydra was an influential American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in the late 1960s, known for pioneering a sound that blended heavy hard rock with the roots of Southern rock and blues-boogie.
Unlike their contemporaries who leaned towards country-rock or extended improvisations, Hydra distinguished themselves with a more aggressive style, similar to British bands like Free or early Led Zeppelin. They are considered the first "heavy Southern rock" band.
Despite their success in the Atlanta club scene and touring with legends like ZZ Top, Rush, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band never achieved mainstream commercial stardom and broke up in the late 1970s. In 2005, the band reunited for two special performances that resulted in the release of the live album "Hydra: Live After All These Years."
Hydra is the self-titled debut album by the Southern rock band, released in 1974 by Capricorn Records. It was produced by Dan Turbeville. Experts describe it as "solid southern rock/boogie blues with competent lead guitars (and some slide too)." A reviewer for BGO Records called it "one of the hardest rock records by any southern band of the '70s." Many fans consider it a "lost classic" and the best of the three studio albums the band released in the 1970s.
